![]() The "Boiling Rock" two-parter also felt forced and really accomplished little considering that Hakoda had little involvement with anyone for the entire season and the Azula betrayal could have been place in most other episode plots.Īnd then there are the surprisingly abundant amount of writing oversights throughout the season, even in the better episodes. The "Black Sun" two-parter had its moments but was really a lot of waiting for the group to be trashed and the story to take its next step (Zuko's character moments were the highlights). "The Avatar and the Firelord" was great but also felt purely necessary for the sake of it rather than being organically built into the narrative. "The Awakening" was good but felt almost forced in the characters moving toward the invasion rendezvous and Aang getting over his guilt. A lot of the momentum from Season 2 felt lost, and the episodes which did move the plot forward almost felt perfunctory in their execution. The first half was basically the characters waiting around for the invasion to get started, and the second half (though considerably better) revolved around waiting for the big finale. That's a big criticism for me: It felt like very little was actually going on this season. "The Western Air Temple," "The Firebending Masters," and "The Southern Raiders" all had terrific writing and character interactions which felt touching and had purpose. "Sokka's Master" is pretty hilarious and genuinely feels meaningful in Sokka proving himself. The interactions are organic and the stakes are truly present. My favorite episodes this season were the ones which involved characters directly driving the action and having bits of humor scattered throughout. "The Beach," "The Runaway," "Nightmares and Daydreams," and "The Ember Island Players" tried to have a mixture of goofy antics and serious character development and failed at both for me with some forced confrontations (that beach therapy session) and bland plots. #Avatar the last airbender book 3 episode 3 vimeo series"The Painted Lady" was probably the second worst episode in the series with Katara emitting peak obnoxygen gas and some really dumb plot and character writing. Mind you, it was definitely not bad by any means but after the great storytelling and character dynamics continually demonstrated in the phenomenal Book 2, I was surprised I was kind of bored with some episodes, especially in the first half.
